In the heart of North Sumatra, lies a pristine tropical forest ecosystem, the Sitandiang Forest, home to one of the world’s rarest great ape species — the Tapanuli Orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis). This species was only scientifically identified in 2017 and immediately entered the list of the world’s most endangered species.
The Uniqueness of the Tapanuli Orangutan
The Tapanuli Orangutan is different from its close relatives in Kalimantan and northern Sumatra. They have curlier hair, distinctive male calls, and slightly different feeding and nesting behaviors. This species is only found in a limited area in the Batang Toru Mountains, including the Sitandiang Forest — making it an endemic animal with a very small population, estimated at less than 800 individuals in the wild.
We will guide you through the Sitandiang forest to find many exotic wild flora and fauna: Black langur, Silvery langur, pig tail monkey, siamang, agile gibbon and the very rare Tapanuli orangutan. There are also giant trees such as Koompassia excelsa trees, and several types of ficus trees. Lizards and snakes that can be found at night, hornbills and colorful birds, spiders of various shapes, singing insects and giant flowers of the Amorphophallus type.
Our forest rangers have a lot of experience and knowledge about the forest, and the ability to search and find wild animals that move freely by tracking from animal tracks. If you are planning to visit the Batangtoru forest to meet the amazing wildlife.
Our team will help you organize your stay in the forest, trekking trip, overnight camp accommodation, and food during the tour. We will be happy to assist you with your trekking tour and decide the number of days you want to spend exploring the forest. The packages we prepare can be customized according to your own wishes.
